It Started off With the Right Message
What started out seeming like a wonderful poster fighting against racism and hatred quickly turned into almost the exact opposite. Superman is seen talking to the children and young adults about how important it is to treat everyone equally regardless of their race religion, or natural origin. The only problem is that they then say that to not do so is "un-American"....and that everyone must keep their schools "all American".
There is some serious mixed messaging going on in this poster. Although the creators of it surely meant well, something got lost in the process and it doesn't look like their true message came across.
They Tried to Warn Them
This innocent (and perhaps naive) traveler from the UK was looking to take a nice trip to Chernobyl, Ukraine. He posted in a group asking for advice and tips for his upcoming travels. Another user was concerned due to the rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine and tried to warn the potential traveler of the risks involved. Instead of heeding the warning, this Brit called the other man a troll.
Pettiness to the finest was portrayed when the "troll" asked the British traveler if they still thought they were a troll after the situation between Russia and Ukraine blew up (literally) into a full-blown tragedy.
Fun for the WHOLE Family
Ahh, the days of utter and complete sexism in everyday advertisements...it was truly a terrible time in history for women and their rights. This ad for the popular game, Battleship, says that it is "fun for the whole family". However, according to their marketing visuals, it looks like it is more fun for the men of the family who are sitting and playing while the women watch and clean all the dishes.
Thankfully, an advertisement like this wouldn't really fly these days. It's truly sad to think that this used to be considered acceptable, and even worse, most people never even would think twice about it!
Well, They Were Clearly Wrong
It's sometimes funny to see people so boldly claiming their opinions online for everyone to see. It is even funnier when history, and a matter of time, proves them utterly and completely wrong. This user posted that if things escalated between Ukraine and Russia that the Ukrainians would simply put down their weapons and welcome the Russians with open arms. After all, they are brothers and would never want to harm each other.
This man saw just how inaccurate his words were just a few months later when, sadly, this exact thing was put to the test. The Ukrainians most definitely did not just put down their weapons and welcome the Russians in.
Not Exactly a Calculator... But Close Enough
Anyone who went to school in the 90s most certainly always heard their math teachers balk against the use of calculators. They preferred for you to use a pencil and paper or do mental math, claiming "you will not always have a calculator in your pocket". What they didn't know is that just a few years later literally almost everyone would carry around a calculator in their pocket...in the form of a cellphone.
Who would have thought that it would only take a few years to totally disprove these adamant and aggressive math teachers from the 90s? What do math teachers say now to try to convince people to do mental math?
The Internet Proved Them Wrong
The Daily Mail had the audacity (some might call it stupidity) to publish this article in the year 2000. The headline reads "Internet may be just a passing fad as millions give up on it". Although you are free to read the whole article, it seems crazy to think that some people really thought the internet was not here to stay. Well, the internet certainly proved them wrong (and quickly).
Who were these "millions" who apparently gave up on the internet? It certainly didn't take them much time to give it a try again as they are possibly among those reading this now.
They Thought Skateboarding Was a Crime
Imagine that there was really a time when people thought that skateboarding was a crime. In fact, they were so passionate about their beliefs about this that they created their own t-shirts about it and demanded that it not be included as an Olympic sport. Why would anyone have such an adamant hatred of skateboarding to the point of considering it a crime to go skateboarding?
Clearly, their shirts did not work to keep skateboarding out of the Olympics. Despite their clever and creative logo designs, skateboarding is very much a part of the Olympics today and not an illegal act.
He Quickly Regretted It
This seems to just be a case of purely jinxing a situation. The universe looked down on this man as he wrote out his tweet and laughed as it thought of what was in store. He claimed to all of his viewers that "you will never regret going to the gym". However, it looked like he changed his mind on that just a few hours later after getting locked and stuck in the gym for hours.
That must have been pretty scary to get locked in the gym and not be able to find anyone who can help. There is no way that he didn't regret going to the gym after that!
Lady Gaga's Haters Couldn't Have Been More Wrong
Somewhere in the world, there is a group of 12 people who hated Stefani Germanotta (the soon-to-be Lady Gaga) so much that they literally created a Facebook group to embarrass her and say that "you will never be famous". They must be the ones who are embarrassed now as Lady Gaga is one of the most famous people in the world. This is one of the many reasons you should never bully people!
The saddest part is that now these people probably go around telling all their friends that they went to school with Lady Gaga and they were the closest of friends!
That Is Some Toxic Snow
Everyone knows that the snow seen in movies is not usually actual, real snow but rather some fake alternative meant to last forever. Well, who knew that the snow used in the 1930s film The Wizard of Oz was a particularly toxic version of fake snow made out of 100% asbestos fibers. These fibers are highly toxic to humans and can cause permanent damage to the body.
It looked like such an innocent and sweet scene from the movie, but it was actually horrible and toxic for the actors and actresses. Not everything is as good as it looks on the outside.
Remember to Turn off Your Computers
It was the year 1999. Computers had just made their first appearances in the everyday lives of ordinary people. But something strange was in the air as the year was about to change to 2000. Panic spread across the world as there was a rumored impending disaster regarding a programming shortcut that was expected to wreak havoc on the computer world. This sign is among the many that were warning people to turn off their computers before the new year.
Whether it was the work of countless programmers or simply n exaggerated risk, the world will never know. Regardless, maybe everyone turning off their computers for the night made for a better New Year's.
When Apple Used to Be Affordable
There was a time when Apple truly prided itself in being both affordable and useful. Somewhere along the lines things changed and they decided to remarket themselves as the luxurious and expensive choice. As a result, they truly became expensive. Although with that fame and desire, the days of affordable Apple advertisements like this one quickly became a thing of the past. Now Apple is blowing minds and budgets.
Apple as the world knows it today probably would not even exist if they did not change their entire marketing plan. Although people like affordable, it seems they like unique and desirable better.
Oh the Irony Ellen
If you're going to have a poster hung up with your picture across it and some inspirational words, you should really make sure that you live by those words in your everyday life. This poster of Ellen DeGeneres with the words "be kind to one another" written in bold print (and even quoted by her) is one of those examples. Ellen is not known to be the nicest of people, quite the opposite actually.
It looks like she needs to learn how to practice what she preaches! This poster has her looking a little bit like a hypocrite considering all the people who have complained about her rudeness.
That's Not a Good Boy
It looks like things were very different when this film was made. The boy comes home and his mother asks him if he has been a good boy. What is his response? "Of course I have...I killed three Indians". If the mother expressed shock or concern, perhaps this clip could be redeemed, but instead, she is seen smiling from ear to ear....apparently very happy with her son's actions.
It would be interesting to know the context of this scene. What happened before and afterward? Did this little boy actually do that and how on earth is his mother proud of him?
That's an Interesting Comparison
This is one of the many extremely confusing comparisons out there on the recent Ukrainian and Russian conflict. American politicians never cease to add their little bit of an opinion on the topic, even if it doesn't make much sense at all. This post hasn't even really had time to age poorly or well, but even in the moment, it does not make the most sense!
It's very interesting to see all the different perspectives across the political spectrum in the US and it is always nice to get a good laugh out of some of the stupid things the politicians say.
That Is One Loaded Issue
Imagine shoving every shocking title onto the cover of one edition of your magazine. This issue of the Post managed to include warmongering, racism, offensive terminology, and hatred all in one. It makes anyone from the younger generations cringe to think that these were the kinds of magazines people were reading on a daily basis. And it's even crazier to see how far the world has come!
The titles of these articles are so disturbing that it almost makes you want to go and read the articles themselves and see what kind of craziness was written and distributed at the time.
Texas Would Never in a Million Years
It looks like Beth Van Duyne needed to be a little more careful with her words, speaking boldly and proudly about what Texans would or would not do. She made her bold claim about the Lone Star State after the Mayor of LA told all the citizens to turn off their major appliances, turn down the thermostats, and turn off all unnecessary electricity. This would be unheard of in Texas!
Although it is a nice concept to conserve energy, they really should be more focused on the big corporations that are overconsuming rather than the individuals!
Obesity Standards Have Changed
A lot has changed over the course of the years and through the decades. The overall health of Americans has dramatically decreased and obesity is on the rise. According to this cartoon from the 90s, this weight (260 pounds) was considered comically and extremely obese. Fast forward a few decades and this is closer to an average for many people and hardly even considered overweight. It's crazy how the standards change.
Whether it is for the better or worse that the obesity standards have greatly changed throughout the decades. Perhaps only time will tell!
If Only You Could Get a Phone for That Price Now
Imagine complaining about spending between 300-400 dollars on a brand new phone. Just ten years later and the prices have more than doubled and everyone buys new phones without a thought. It would be interesting to see how many new phones this person has bought over the years since posting this original complaint. What do they have to say about the prices now? Are they still complaining (although more justifiably so).
The naivity of the new world of cellular devices can be so clearly seen in just this post alone. What a dream it would be to get a phone for that price nowadays!
Looks Like He Lost That Bet
At the beginning of the corona pandemic, no one knew how long it would last. Would it be the next Spanish flu like in 1918 or would it simply be a passing worry like swine flu, ebola, or zika virus? This man was certain that it would pass just like ebola, but it appears that his counterpart knew better. However, he was so sure of himself that the two even made a bet.
Do you think they actually paid the 5 dollars, since over two years have passed and the world is still fighting against covid-19 and all the restrictions surrounding it?
They Never Saw It Coming
Never in a million years did Texans ever expect to see a view like this as a part of their "winter life". If you're being honest, Texans didn't really ever know what winter was until very recently when they were bombarded with a horribly cold winter that even included snow! No one knew what to do, they did not have the necessary infrastructure set up, and it became a total disaster and embarrassment.
Whoever posted this must have been very embarrassed when things turned out to be just the same for them in their beloved Texas.
Who Is Laughing Now?
Who would have thought that just a few years after Trump gave a speech at the UN warning people that they are becoming too dependent on Russian oil, it would present itself as such a problem in the future. The German delegation seemed particularly amused by Trump's claims and his speech and are even seen here laughing and smiling. Looks like Trump is having the last laugh now.
This really must be a very embarrassing picture to have circulating, for these German delegation members. There are probably lots of people who would use this against them in election time!
He Just Wants to Keep His Border Secure
Well, considering the current string of events that are taking place in the world right now, it looks like this comment did not age particularly well. Tucker Carlson was sure and adamant that "Putin just wants to keep his Western border secure" and nothing else. If you look at what is happening between Russia and Ukraine right now, you will probably think otherwise as that does not appear to be Putin's only goal.
Do you think this man regrets his statement at all or is he still claiming that this is the case, even after seeing everything that has happened between Russia and Ukraine?
This Is Some Bad Advice
Perhaps at the time this seemed like very good advice, but time would tell that that is not the case. In this article giving suggestions on how to befriend people at work, one of the suggestions is to "channel your inner Ellen DeGeneres". They even go on to rave about how she seems like such a nice person and that everyone loves her. They even claim that she is funny but not mean or snarky!
Perhaps the key word in this whole article is "seems" as there have been many other claims regarding Ellen's kindness throughout the years. Or perhaps the writer of this article is a mean person as well!
Seems Like She Is in for a Surprise
Jenna Ryan was one of the many people who took part in the capital riot and "invasion" in January 2021. Instead of taking responsibility for her actions, she was arrogant enough to make the claim that she is "definitely not going to jail". What is even worse is why she thinks she will get off without a scratch...because she has "blond hair, white skin, a great job, and a great future". Sorry to burst your bubble, but that isn't really how it works.
She definitely did end up going to jail and spent 60 days in prison. It must have been pretty embarrassing to look back at this tweet after coming out of jail.
This One Is Almost Sad
Whether you love Trump or you hate him, there is no denying that the overall world opinion of this American president was not the best. One might say that he was the laughing stock of the world...which it appears is exactly what he was trying to prevent. Although he probably doesn't see himself that way and thinks that he fulfilled this need to the fullest, the rest of the world might have a different opinion.
This tweet didn't age well at all and it probably didn't sit too well at the time either. Even since Trump got into politics, he was not the world's favorite person.
This Is Poetic Justice
BreeAnn doesn't seem to be a big fan of Walmart employees, to the extreme that she even posted on Facebook about how horrible they are with their bad attitudes. She even ridicules them for not being able to find a job anywhere else. Fast forward a few years and guess where BreeAnn is working? She started a new job and none other then....Walmart.
This is almost too comical to be true. How can you post this update especially after posting such a horrible thing before? Hopefully, she will be a nice employee though and treat customers well.
It Just Gets Worse and Worse
From the makers of Aspirin...presenting to you the amazing cure known as...Herion. This magical treatment is a wonderful "non-addictive" relief from "the coughs". And just in case you're worried, to ease your mind, it has been in use since 1898! Imagine having a little cough and choosing to take some heroin to get rid of it! And the worst part is that they market it as non-addicitive. Poor people of the early 1900s.
They can definitely guarantee that once someone tries their products that they will have a loyal customer for life. Sadly, those customers will struggle to have it any other way.
The Most Ironic Tweet
There is a great quote by the renowned Isaac Newton which says "we build too many walls and not enough bridges." No one would think it was funny to quote it until you think that Donald Trump is the one tweeting it on his page. The man who fought harder than anyone to build a wall between the US and Mexico posted a few years before his presidency about how we should stop building walls.
He should really try to be a bit more consistent with his ideologies. This was Trump of 2013, but President Trump and pre-President Trump seem to be two completely different people.
Perhaps They Should Take Away His Nobel Prize
If there was ever a reason to revoke a person's Nobel prize, Paul Krugman would be the one worthy of it. He is a Nobel-prize-winning economist who is quoted as saying "by 2005 of so, it will become clear that the Internet's impact on the economy has been no greater than the fax machine's". People really shouldn't listen to his economic advice and he literally could not have been more wrong.
When the year 2005 came around and computers were one of the most upcoming and popular things in the world (with the biggest impact on society), he must have felt true shame.
It's Not That Simple
Oh if only it was that simple with Apple. There used to be a time when Apple's slogan was "Does more. Costs less. It's that simple." Something went wanky in the process and that is most definitely not how Apple would describe or market themselves now. As a matter of fact, it is the exact opposite. It may do more, but it certainly does not cost less...it costs much more!
This sticker really brings back the nostalgia of a time when Apple was reasonably priced and not over-marketed like most things available for consumption and purchase.
Facebook's Fake Promise
Either Facebook just downright lied to all the people or there was truly a time when they believed they did not and would not sell people's private information. The best part is that they claim "you have control over how your information is shared, so we won't share your personal information with people or services who you don't want to have it. We don't give advertisers access to your personal information".
They were very straightforward and "honest" with their answer...the only problem is that things changed pretty quickly as the years went by and now Facebook can only claim the exact opposite.
When They Were Just "no-Names"
It's hard to imagine a time that Australian actor Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston were considered "two virtual unknowns". There is hardly a person in the world now who does not know these famous people, oftentimes due to their role in this exact movie - Thor. Marvel rolled the dice and casted these "no-names" and it looks like it turned out to be one of the best risks they have ever taken.
This article was written in 2009, which is pretty recent considering how famous these two have become since they starred in this movie and others.
Listen to Best Buy
Y2K was a crazy time. People were bulk-purchasing food and supplies as if the end of the world was approaching. No one knew what to expect with the dawn of a new century and they were preparing for the worst. It didn't make matters better that many were expecting a widespread computer failure to sweep the world. Best Buy, along with countless other places, warned people to turn off their computers before the new year came in.
Although it turned out to be nothing to be concerned about at all, the panic that swept across the world was unmatched in similar times. It almost sounds like a Cinderella-type requirement here...turn your computer off before midnight or you might turn into a pumpkin.
No Need for a Computer
Ken Olsen may have been the founder and CEO of Digital Equipment Corporation in the 1970s, but that does not mean that anyone should have taken his advice when it came to computers. He was quoted as saying "there is no reason for any individual to have a computer in his home". Although that may have been true based on the computers that existed at the time, things would quickly change.
Do you think he lived to regret his words or did he stay adamant the entire time that computers were not needed as a part of the home?
They Should Have Said Goodbye Blockbuster
There were days when Blockbuster was the best thing in existence and everyone lined up on a Friday night to go to a store and rent the latest arrivals of movies. Then Netflix came into the picture with its DVD delivery services. Blockbuster probably never saw their doom coming, especially as they tweeted telling people to leave Netflix. Even in 2011, it was probably a losing battle, but they were still trying to convince people that they were better than Netflix.
There are a surprising number of likes and retweets on this post. It's hard to tell if they are laughing at Blockbuster or honestly giving reasons to leave Netflix.
They Were Just a Little off in Their Estimation
Back in 1949, Popular Mechanics made the estimation that "computers in the future may weigh no more than 1.5 tons." Well, on the one hand, you can't really argue with them because they do not weigh more than 1.5 tons. However, it seems like their guage and estimate were a little bit too high. Computers nowadays can weigh practically nothing and can be too small to even detect.
It must have been so hard to imagine that the computer that the world knows today developed so quickly from what was available in the 1940s.
A Truly Tragic Irony
The World Trade Center in New York were the tallest buildings in the world, reaching 1,368 feet into the air across 110 stories. This advertisement used this fact to claim that this is "the closest some of us will ever get to heaven." Sadly, they were not wrong and they were not right at the same time. The tragedy that brought down the towers really took far too many people to heaven with them.
They never would have thought while making this poster that such a horrible tragedy would be in store for these buildings. It seemed too crazy to ever be true. No one ever thought this poster would become tragically ironic.
It's Just a Passing Fad
If you had a penny for every time someone said that the newest and most upcoming technology was just a passing fad, you would probably be a millionaire. This top toy company executive was either in denial or very stupid to think that video games were just a passing fad and nothing to worry about. That game company is probably out of business now and meanwhile, video games are thriving more than ever!
He really thought that everyone was overreacting to the trend and that it would simply pass in a few months as "this is just another gadget" that Americans would get excited about and then forget. Looks like he was very wrong.
He Didn't Even Believe in His Own Discovery
Physicist Heinrich Hertz proved the existence of radio waves but clearly did not think much of his discovery (or himself). When people asked him what he discovered he stated that it is "of no use whatsoever". People tried to ask him even more trying to figure out what it could be used for and he said "Nothing, I guess", much to everyone's shock later in history.
It looks like it took another person to discover how useful the radio waves were, even if Heinrich Hertz did not believe in them himself.
